What is an EMS competition?
The Creighton EMS Competition
will consist of teams of three members plus a fourth alternate member
who cannot participate but can help the team take photos or videos
during the event, learn and be part of the scenario process and help the
team practice and if needed, fill in for a member. Teams may be ALS
(minimum of 2 Paramedics) or BLS (minimum of 2 EMTs) to participate.
Each team is given the same EMS Scenario (“the call”) matched up against
the clock (usually 15 minutes) and must triage assess, begin treatment
and make transport decisions. Each event will have 5-8 patients, some
critical, some moderate and minor, some “distracters” (non injured but
either helpful or non helpful to each scenario). ALS teams will be
judged in one category and BLS teams in another, with the ALS teams
being responsible for both BLS and ALS care.
The scenario is based on a possible
true to life event in which both human and non human (manikins) patients
are used. Each team is awarded points off a grade sheet in which judges
will keep track of points either awarded on a timely fashion or when
each procedure is completed. Judging teams are made up of a lead judge
who will give information to team members and shadow the team captain,
feedback judges who will give vital information on patient status and
treatment success, and scoring judges whose only role is to score on a
predetermined score sheet how a team has successfully achieved points on
these patients. Scoring judges are not allowed and do not give feedback
to the teams.
